Fresh Fruit Tips

  • Putting fruit -such as plums- in a glass jar with a lid looks pretty on the countertop (very Martha Stewart). It keeps the fruit flies away and at the same time allows the fruit to ripen. When the fruit is as ripe as you would like it to be, the entire jar can be kept in the fridge
  • Many types of fruit -including avocado, bananas, pears, peaches, and tomatoes -- will ripen better when placed in a paper bag.

To speed up the ripening process of any fruit, place an already ripe apple or banana peel in the same bag and store it at room temperature.

Make sure that you check the fruit daily so it doesn't become over-ripe.

The natural ethylene produced by the fruit inside this bag will cause the fruit to ripen faster than by just setting it on a counter or leaving it in your refrigerator

  • To ripen green bananas, wrap them in a damp dishtowel before placing them in the bag.

Once your fruit has adequately ripened, you can stop the ripening by putting them in the refrigerator

  • Kiwi fruit can be refrigerated for a week or more after it has ripened
