Useful Little Lemons

How to Buy: Choose lemons that are bright yellow in color and only gives slightly when squeezed.

How to Store: They can be kept at room temperature for about two weeks before they start to go soft and eventually mold.

They can be stored for about 6 weeks or so if you put them in plastic bags and keep them in the fridge.

Temperatures between 4°C and 10°C are best. The fridge door or center area of the refrigerator maintains this temperature well.

After you cut one in half, you should use it within 2-3 days.

They are very popular for cleaning because they are high in acid and therefore kill bacteria.

They can be used for many purposes, including getting stains out of cutting boards, soap scum out of washing machines, water deposits out of sinks, and even to brighten whites!

Two tips:

Remove the stains left on plastic storage containers by squeezing the juice from one onto the dirty surface and letting it sit for twenty minutes or so. Rinse with water. If the plastic is still stained repeat the process until the plastic is clean.

Add half a cup of juice to your laundry to brighten whites and make them smell fresh.

Interesting facts:

  • The average lemon has about 3 tablespoons of juice inside
  • Their juice is about 5% citric acid, which gives them their tart taste
  • Lemonade may have originated in medieval Egypt
