How To Open A Coconut
This will show you how to open a coconut!
You've seen the coconuts at the grocery store but were too intimidated to buy one because you weren't sure you'd be able to open it once you got it home.
You've had coconut recipes you've been wanting to try for a long time, but never had the chance because you always passed up the coconuts when you were shopping.
Well, get those recipes back out and plan on making a delectable coconut treat for your family or friends, because opening a coconut really isn't that difficult!
Soon you'll be enjoying fresh coconut and will never be afraid to buy one again!
Okay, so how DO you get to the inside of the coconut! There are a few different ways.
Make sure you are holding the coconut over your sink (or get a bowl or pan to catch the juice).
1. Get a heavy knife (meat cleaver) and tap the coconut (with the blunt end) along its seam while you turn the coconut. Keep tapping as you turn the coconut so you're tapping new areas. The coconut will split in half evenly.
OR
2. Firmly hold the coconut and tap it firmly (not lightly) along its seam on the edge of your kitchen counter or other hard surface with an edge.
OR
3. Wrap the coconut in a thick towel, lay it on a hard floor and hit it with a hammer to break it apart.
You can cut the meat out of the coconut by using a kitchen knife then spooning it out.
You may want to drain the juice out before you split the coconut. To do this, find the indentations that look like eyes on the coconut and insert a screwdriver through one or more of the indentations to break the shell, then drain the juice into a bowl or other container. Or, you can use a large nail and hammer to puncture the indentations to get the juice out.
